WhatsApp Ads Case Study: Over 2,000 Chats for a Durban Clothing Retailer

In 30 days, one Facebook ad that sent people straight to WhatsApp started over 2,000 conversations for a Durban based clothing retailer, at about R1.40 each before VAT. The ad reached over 133,000 people, and the total ad spend for the month was under R3,000 before VAT. This WhatsApp ads case study covers what we set up, what the numbers looked like week by week, and what we'd do next.

The goal

The retailer sells in store, so the goal was simple: more people near the shop asking about stock and prices on WhatsApp, where the staff could answer and invite them in.

So the campaign had one job: start WhatsApp conversations.

What we set up

  • One campaign, one goal. A Meta campaign optimised for WhatsApp conversations, running from 12 September to 11 October 2026.

  • A tight local area. The ad only showed to people living in or near the parts of Durban the shop draws customers from.

  • One ad. A set of real product photos that people could swipe through, with a button that opened a WhatsApp chat with the store.

  • A steady daily budget. Under R100 a day before VAT, left alone for the full month.

No website step in between. Tap the ad, and you're in a chat with the shop.

The results

All figures from Meta Ads Manager, before VAT, 12 September to 11 October 2026.

  • Over 2,000 WhatsApp conversations started

  • About R1.40 per conversation

  • Under R3,000 total ad spend

  • Over 133,000 people reached

The cost per conversation held between R1.22 and R1.58 in each 10 day block of the month. One ad ran the whole time and the cost stayed in that narrow range, so a steady budget gave a steady flow of chats.

Almost every conversation came from Facebook. Instagram added very few, which told us where this retailer's customers actually spend their time.

What worked

  • Sending people straight to WhatsApp. For a store that sells face to face, a chat is the shortest path to a visit.

  • Keeping the area tight. Showing the ad only near the shop kept the chats relevant. People asking were people who could come in.

  • Leaving it alone. We didn't keep changing the budget or the audience, so Meta could learn who responds and keep costs down.

What we'd change next time

  • Fresh photos. The cost per conversation crept up in the second 10 days, a common sign people are tired of seeing the same ad. New photos from the shop floor should help.

  • Track what the chats turn into. Over 2,000 conversations is the start. A simple count of how many became store visits or sales lets the next report show money made, not only chats started.

What this WhatsApp ads case study means for you

If your business sells in person and your customers already use WhatsApp, a Click to WhatsApp campaign is one of the most direct ways to turn ad spend into conversations. You need a clear local area, real photos of what you sell, someone ready to answer chats quickly, and a budget you can hold for 30 days.

Results depend on what you sell, where you are and how fast you reply, so we can't promise the same cost per chat. What we can do is show you what a campaign like this would look like for your business.
